I found this dresser in the second hand store..bought it for $25...not bad. I needed a small dresser for my son's room and this one caught my eye and the price was right. Notice the lovely patina and no legs....YUCK!!

Anyhow, got out my paint brushes and went at it and I must say I am very happy with the results. The whole thing is handpainted by me and my son loves it. I might have to keep this one even after he moves out(in a few years) it should age really well. Let me know what you think.
It felt like I had worked on it for awhile but it didn't represent the work I had put into it. Sometimes I feel like I've been painting forever but my artwork doesn't seem to echo the effort some days.

It's coming along.....I can see all kinds of things I don't like..rats!! This could take a little more time than I had planned. It's one of the largest pieces of art I've done...16" x 12". Okay back at it....I'll probably post one more, then the finished piece...this could take awhile!!! Still needs some work on the background but I think I know where I'm going with it........I just need the paint to cooperate ;=)maggiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13062265610217775154noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4279720205127089641.post-73873580947680071252010-12-28T18:41:00.000-08:002010-12-28T19:15:47.654-08:00Back In The Saddle

Okay.........it's been ages since I've posted...babies have been born, buildings have been built..yada,yada,yada..

Anyhooo this is my latest project...it's a drawing of a fairy..don't cha know. I am really enjoying this subject matter. I love fantasy art and there are so many that do it better than I...but like I said, I'm having fun. A few seem to sell along the way which is always a good thing. I've done a few commission pieces since my last post, so it's not like I've totally deserted my paint brush.

I think I might keep this one going on my blog as a WIP...we'll see.

I've been keeping up with everyone else's work that I follow on line, and I must say some lovely work is going on.

Christmas was great....got both my boys cell phones. You should have seen the "look of stupid" on their faces when their Dad and I had the phones ring under the tree while they were still wrapped! Priceless!!!

Hubby takes off to Barbados on New Years day to see his family for a couple of weeks. It won't be that great a visit as he will be seeing his nephew for probably the last time. His nephew was diagnosed with ALS a year and a half ago....so sad. He is in good spirits though and seeing his fav Uncle will be good medicine.

So...I went back to work at my parttime job today...it's in retail...at a very well known Canadian department store....and let me just say, the "good will shine" has officially come off the holidays!!!! Fiesty shoppers out there people ...needing some drugs or alcohol or both!!!

I'll sign off on this post and hopefully get another pic up with this piece of art further along...and remember shoppers....there is no death in retail...at least not yet!!! ;=)
Thought I'd throw this sketch up...not sure where I'm going with it..we'll see.

I started a few projects but then with my usual brilliance...sliced my finger open with an exacto knife while I was packaging some art to send off...I wonder if they'll notice the blood on the package - maybe they'll assume I truly suffer for my art (and....no I didn't really send it with blood on it). I did go to the doc and I remember telling her I'd rather give birth to a third child right there and then, than have her poke at it....hurt like a b#tch!!

So finger is healing nicely and I'm back in the saddle again...drawing and painting. It's worth a mention that I had to keep the cut dry...sooooo, no dish washing for me - much to my sons horror!!

Now don't leave me a bunch of pity comments about my booboo...I have survived and milked this puppy for all it's worth...did I mention the tetanus shot??????

Moving on......maybe I'll post this one when it's done and.......maybe I won't.maggiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13062265610217775154noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4279720205127089641.post-90747416935670910512010-05-19T16:04:00.000-07:002010-05-19T16:04:28.171-07:00Latest Fairy Commission

I'm sure there are some pieces there in need of a new life with some handy dandy painting from yours truly....we shall see!!!!!
maggiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13062265610217775154noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4279720205127089641.post-8818173462083111572010-03-28T18:36:00.000-07:002010-03-28T18:37:40.866-07:00No. 8

Did I ever mention I love horse racing?.........I do. I worked at a couple tracks when I was younger and fell in love with the horses I groomed. I always felt it was a privilege to work with them. They were really big and always on the muscle.......they allowed me in their space.

I'm still very close to the industry....my "other half" works at Woodbine (big racetrack in Toronto) and I go as often as I can. My boys occasionally go in to the track as well (they're 15 and 12) and they love to see the horses up close and have developed a real respect for them.

Needless to say over the years I've expressed my affection for them in my art. This one....I did a few years back(okay...more than a few years).

Thoroughbred racing starts at Woodbine this weekend and I look forward to the inspiration it brings to my heart and my artwork.

Every time you see it you're reminded that someone loves ya.

You can or your valentine can, keep it on a desk, dresser or a bedside table ....... anywhere you need a little love. The keepsakes are original watercolours that I did and I found these great frames for them. I picked frames that were kind of shabby chic and a couple that were more sleek or contemporary.

I might do some for other special times of the year...I like the idea of having them out where I can see the love!! It was a quiet, peaceful time...well quietER - I do have 2 boys 3 years apart and peaceful might be stretching it a bit...maybe.

I hate the thing.....oooh that felt good! I've twittered about destroying it...tying it to the back of my car and taking a couple of spins around the block. Watching it in the rear view mirror as it bounces off the curb, bits flying everywhere......a girl can dream.

At the very least, I think a hammer (such as the lovely one shown here - it has a nice balance and weight to it) should be included in the accessories for the xbox. I mean it's gonna happen eventually - why make me go look for the one buried in the garage somewhere. I could prop it up right beside the damn thing as incentive. Maybe put a plaque underneath that says "in case of excessive fighting, grab and start pounding the ever loving crap out of box - pound until there is nothing left and then pound some more"

What I probably need to do is start an Internet support group for mothers who live with xboxmania - we could get it diagnosed as a real disorder and get some serious medication to help us through the days. You know, the kids come and tell you they want to play xbox - you say, "okay honey" and wolf down half a bottle of Valium.

This could be my life's work - a way of giving back to the human race...mothers and fathers everywhere could benefit. I'll keep you posted on the future website to be developed...www.mothersagainstxboxunite.com.

Keep your hammers at the ready ladies!!!
maggiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13062265610217775154noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4279720205127089641.post-89168575192080237432009-05-12T06:06:00.000-07:002010-03-21T19:05:50.226-07:00Work In Progress Part V
I meant to finish this series off yesterday but life and work got in the way. What it does show, is the layering effect I like to use and the build up of colour.

With watercolours there's no "do over". Their transparency is very unforgiving. She was a great lady, she's been gone now for 10 years..I can't believe it's been that long.

We were great friends, did everything together. My dad was in the navy so we moved a lot and I mean a lot. She was the constant in our life. First day of a new school and I'd be sweatin' bricks..sick to my stomach and she be there. I 'd come home crying because some kid said something and she'd be there. I suppose that's the reason why I've always been home for my children, she taught me what was important..to be there.

After my dad retired from the navy he became Chief of Protocol for the Province of Alberta. That meant a lot of functions had to be attended by my parents. Mom and I use to go shopping for material and patterns for her dresses..lots of evening wear, ball gowns and day wear. It was fun. We'd make a day of it and go for lunch and hang out.

Her first grandchild she met, the second she met but didn't really understand who he was..at least I don't think she did. I had gone home to visit them in Kelowna BC after my own relationship had fallen apart. I discovered I was pregnant with my second child while I was there. One morning my dad called me, 7am I think it was. He said he was having problems waking my mother up. I went to her and I knew right away. We called the ambulance and it was determined at the hospital that she had an AVM (Arterial Venous Malformation). It's a type of non-hereditary aneurysm...a birth defect actually. Anyway, a surgery later and a year in rehab later SHE decided she'd had enough and stopped eating.

I woke up at 1:30am January 26th 1998 and started to walk around the house for no particular reason..wasn't thirsty, didn't need to pee..just restless. The call came at 1:40am. I heard my father answer the phone..I knew she was gone...I had woken as she passed.

She was a grand lady, a phenomenal mother. Always missed...never forgotten...these are the words I had put on her gravestone.

Happy Mother's Day.maggiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13062265610217775154noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4279720205127089641.post-33067819273247816172009-05-10T06:42:00.001-07:002010-03-21T19:06:53.490-07:00Work In Progress Part III

Okay, so now we're getting somewhere..well at least I think I am.
